2010 has already developed into an exciting year, as we expand into our new depot in Inverness and take on new challenges…

Inverness Depot
Having searched for two years for suitable premises into which we can expand, we have this week finally received the keys for our new Inverness depot facility. This warehouse and yard – which will be managed by former mast installer, Andy Baird - will support the met masting operations and serve as hub for the ‘heavy’ side of the business. New and used masts will be stored on bespoke racking in the secure yard, while the warehouse will house lifting equipment and masting hardware. The office and clean workshop (where loggers and instruments are stored, wired and programmed) will remain in Glenelg, where we plan to expand the office-based team.
The new facilities will improve and increase our storage capacity for clients’ stock and enable us to reduce lead times for new masts and site work.

All Energy 2010
Once again, Chillwind will be attending the All Energy conference & exhibition in Aberdeen. This event has grown every year since it started in 2001 and is always an interesting insight into what’s happening across the spectrum of renewable technologies, as well as good fun. Come and talk to us at stand K20 on Wednesday 19th or Thursday 20th May, and perhaps win a power kite!

Another Scandinavian Summer
This year we will return to Sweden to continue the installation of 80m monitoring systems for NV Nordisk Vindkraft AB. Of the 16 masts shipped out last summer, 10 were installed before the snow arrived in earnest. We will therefore return this summer to continue the installation program and undertake refurbishment of some of the older met masts previously installed in Sweden. Drifts of over 1m persist on some of the more northerly sites until early summer, giving a short window of opportunity to work outdoors, so once again the race is on…

Boo
Robert “Boo” Stephen, is rarely out of the Chillwind news and has made the headlines this month by expanding the Stephen clan. Congratulations to Robert and his wife Jackie, who gave birth to their daughter Grace last week.

Quality Project
We are nearing our goal to gain ISO 9001:2008 accreditation, as Peter Williams continues to work on our Quality and Health & Safety management systems. Peter was a military policeman before embarking on a career in project & change management, working on high profile projects such as setting up security systems for the Channel Tunnel. He became involved with Chillwind as a consultant to assist with ISO accreditation and we are pleased that he is now becoming part of the family in the full-time role of Quality and Health & Safety Manager.
Our stage one ISO 9001 assessment by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance is scheduled for August 2010 and we hope to be fully accredited shortly after that.

10 Under the Ben
Not only have we been encouraging staff to get on their bikes through the Cycle to Work scheme, some of us can’t stay off bikes at the weekend either. We are therefore delighted to have 2 teams entering this years 10 Under the Ben mountain biking marathon at Aonach Mor on 15th May. We’ll be racing in the Renewables race-within-a-race organised by the Fort William based wood energy specialists HWE. Well, I say racing. Most of us will be happy just to get to the end of the 10 hour event with our dignity, not to mention other bits, intact! Look out for team ‘Glen Beagers Belief’ and ‘On a Bike and a Prayer’. We’ll post some pictures of the action and/or aftermath on the news blog.
